Bangor, Maine – In a shocking turn of events, a Rochester, New York man was sentenced to three years in federal prison for his role in a cocaine and heroin trafficking operation in Maine.
Derrius Smalls, 20, was arrested on March 9, 2017, after he fled a vehicle carrying 550 bags of heroin and 399 bags of crack cocaine when it was stopped by state and federal agents in Scarborough, Maine. Smalls managed to hide the drugs and avoid arrest that night.
The following day, a Scarborough Police Department K-9 located the hidden drugs.
Smalls was transporting the drugs for Darrell ‘Coast’ Newton and intended to deliver them to an individual in Maine.
Smalls was subsequently indicted together with Newton and 14 other defendants from Rochester, New York, and Central Maine.
All defendants have entered pleas of guilty.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, with assistance provided by the Scarborough Police Department and the Maine State Police.
Derrius Smalls is currently serving a three-year term in federal prison, followed by a three-year term of supervised release, including a six-month term of community confinement.
The sentence highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat drug trafficking in the region.
