DES MOINES, Iowa – Two Des Moines men have been sent to federal prison for their roles in a chilling conspiracy to distribute the deadly drug fentanyl. The grim sentencing comes after an 18-month investigation and a tragic overdose that claimed a life.
In what the courts called a “flagrant disregard for human life,” Ajang Malou Wour, 43, was sentenced to 144 months behind bars, followed by a five-year supervised release term. Wour’s younger associate, Omar Mohamed Nurani, 22, was also given a tough sentence of 120 months in prison, with four years of supervision to follow.
According to public court documents and evidence presented at sentencing, Wour began his fentanyl trafficking career shortly after completing federal supervised release. By September 2024, he had distributed over 60,000 fentanyl pills and 40 ounces of powder. Nurani’s involvement was equally sinister, as he frequently purchased pills from Wour to sell on the streets.
The duo’s operations reached a tragic climax in June 2024 when a customer overdosed and died after taking fentanyl pills sold by Nurani. Despite this loss of life, they continued their lethal trade. Nurani alone distributed over 2,000 fentanyl pills and eight ounces of powder before his arrest.
United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal announced the sentences, emphasizing the gravity of the crime. ‘Fentanyl is a deadly menace that has become the leading cause of drug overdose deaths in our country,’ said Westphal. ‘These sentences send a clear message: there are real consequences for those who peddle this poison on the streets of Iowa.’
The investigation was a collaborative effort, led by the Des Moines Police Department with support from the Ankeny Police Department and the Mid-Iowa Drug Enforcement Task Force. As fentanyl deaths have skyrocketed among youth, especially between 2018 and 2022, this case highlights the urgent need to combat the drug crisis in Iowa.
