East St. Louis Man Sentenced for Unlawful Possession of Firearm
On September 22, 2016, DeShawn C. Carlisle, 20, of East St. Louis, Illinois, was sentenced in federal district court to 21 months imprisonment for unlawful possession of a firearm by a previously convicted felon.
The case against Carlisle began on December 18, 2015, at the Roosevelt Housing complex in East St. Louis, Illinois. At that time, Carlisle was questioned by police officers, but he ran from the scene after being approached. This action was not unexpected, as Carlisle had previously been banned from the complex. In an effort to evade capture, Carlisle discarded a 9mm semi-automatic weapon into a wooded area. The officers, however, were able to apprehend Carlisle and recover the firearm.
The United States Marshals Service led the investigation into the case, with Assistant United States Attorney Daniel T. Kapsak handling the prosecution. In addition to the 21 months imprisonment, the court also ordered Carlisle to serve three years of supervised release, pay a $100 special assessment, and a $250 fine.
Carlisle’s sentence serves as a reminder of the serious consequences that individuals can face when they fail to comply with the law. The case highlights the importance of law enforcement’s efforts to maintain public safety and uphold the rule of law.
The investigation and prosecution of DeShawn C. Carlisle’s case demonstrate the ongoing commitment of law enforcement agencies to prevent and investigate firearm-related crimes.
As a result of the sentence, DeShawn C. Carlisle will spend the next 21 months in prison for his crime.
