Desmon Johnson, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, West Virginia 2023

A local man has been accused of a firearms charge after admitting to a serious crime in Preston County. Desmon Johnson, 35, of Parkville, Maryland, has been charged with ‘Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.’

Johnson, having previously been convicted of a felony, admitted to having five firearms in his possession in September 2016 in Preston County.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime. PSN focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs for lasting reductions in crime.

Johnson faces up to 10 years incarceration and a fine of up to $250,000. The actual sentence imposed will be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Traci M. Cook is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Eastern Panhandle Drug & violent Crimes Task Force, a HIDTA-funded initiative, investigated.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael John Aloi presided over the case.

Johnson’s case serves as a reminder of the importance of Project Safe Neighborhoods in addressing violent crime in our communities. The program has been proven to be effective in reducing violent crime, and it will continue to be a key component of our efforts to keep our communities safe.
