New Jersey Man Charged With Gun Possession at Newark Airport

In a shocking case of attempted gun smuggling, 48-year-old Desmond Herring of Newburgh, New York, pleaded guilty to possessing a stolen and loaded firearm he tried to get through security at Newark Liberty International Airport.

According to court documents and statements made in court, on November 29, 2021, Herring submitted a carry-on bag for inspection at the airport. During the screening of Herring’s luggage, a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agent identified ammunition and a suspected firearm and contacted the Port Authority Police Department.

Herring was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to a 2010 federal conviction for conspiracy to distribute controlled substances. The investigation revealed that his bag contained a 9 millimeter pistol, 10 rounds of 9 millimeter ammunition loaded into a magazine, and 150 additional rounds of 9 millimeter ammunition.

Herring’s actions are a clear threat to public safety, and it is reassuring that he has been held accountable for his crimes. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates on the sentencing.

Herring faces a maximum potential penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Sentencing is scheduled for August 17, 2022.

The investigation was led by the FBI, with assistance from the Port Authority Police Department and the TSA. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Levin of the U.S. Attorney’s Office National Security Unit in Newark represented the government.
