Destin Man Sentenced for Shipping Stolen Jewelry
A Destin man has been sentenced to 240 months in prison after shipping stolen jewelry to Missouri and Louisiana, according to a recent court ruling.
Mark Joshua Mitchell, 40, was sentenced by Christopher P. Canova, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida, to 240 months in prison, after pleading guilty on June 22, 2017, to seven counts of interstate transportation of stolen property.
The investigation revealed that Mitchell had committed six burglaries in Santa Rosa Beach, Panama City Beach, and Destin between 2015 and 2016. The stolen items included multi-carat diamond engagement rings, a three-piece platinum wedding ring set, other jewelry, cash, and Mexican gold coins.
The stolen items were then shipped by Mitchell to Missouri and Louisiana, according to the investigation. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) provided assistance in the case, which was led by the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Tiffany H. Eggers. The United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida is one of 94 offices that serve as the nation’s principal litigators under the direction of the Attorney General.
Victims of the burglaries reported that their residences had been targeted, with jewelry and other items stolen during the break-ins. The stolen items were valued at a significant amount, and Mitchell’s actions have resulted in a lengthy prison sentence.
