JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The gritty streets of Detroit produced a grim headline as Megan Holton, a 27-year-old resident, pleaded guilty in federal court for her role in a brazen heroin distribution scheme that terrorized Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands.
Holton stood before United States District Judge Kim R. Gibson and admitted to conspiring with co-defendants to distribute and possess heroin from spring 2011 until May 15, 2012. The charge carries a severe penalty, with the law providing for a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison and a fine reaching $1 million.
United States Attorney David J. Hickton announced the plea deal, which was scheduled to be followed by sentencing on Oct. 16, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. The actual sentence imposed will be contingent upon the severity of Holton’s crimes and any prior criminal history she may have.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie L. Haines is leading the prosecution against Holton on behalf of the government. The investigation that led to Holton’s downfall was a collaborative effort involving multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Laurel Highlands Resident Agency of the FBI, Pennsylvania State Police, Indiana Police Department, and several local task forces and sheriffs’ departments.
This case is another stark reminder of the relentless nature of the heroin epidemic, which continues to plague communities across the nation. Holton’s guilty plea underscores the government’s commitment to cracking down on drug trafficking operations that threaten public safety.
