Devante Lopes, Racketeering, Massachusetts 2024

BOSTON – A Boston man has been brought to justice for his role in a violent gang, but the streets of Dorchester are still reeling from the grip of the notorious Cameron Street gang.

Devante Lopes, a/k/a “D-Lopes,” 30, of Boston and Quincy, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to participate in a racketeering enterprise, conspiracy to distribute marijuana, and possession with intent to distribute cocaine.

The charges, which carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, stem from Lopes’ involvement with the Cameron Street gang, a violent criminal enterprise that has plagued the Dorchester neighborhood and surrounding areas with murders, attempted murders, armed robberies, carjackings, home invasions, human trafficking, and drug trafficking.

According to court documents, the gang uses violence to maintain and enhance its status and reputation, often targeting rival gangs and witnesses with firearms. Members of the gang also engage in drug trafficking, distributing kilograms of cocaine, crack cocaine, oxycodone, and marijuana throughout Massachusetts.

During the investigation, 21 firearms and hundreds of rounds of ammunition were seized from 11 defendants. Lopes was identified by cooperating witnesses as a member of the gang and was found to have received large quantities of marijuana from California, which he shipped back to the US in exchange for cash.

In April 2022, a search of Lopes’ residence turned up 800 grams of cocaine, hidden compartments containing cash and ammunition, and a foam insert for a firearm. Lopes is set to be sentenced on October 3, 2024, and faces up to 20 years in prison for each of the three charges.

The operation that led to Lopes’ arrest was part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) Strike Force Initiative, which brings together agents from different agencies to disrupt and dismantle organized crime groups.

Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy, James M. Ferguson, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Boston Field Division, and Boston Police Commissioner Cox announced the news, crediting the Massachusetts State Police, United States Postal Inspection Service, and other local law enforcement agencies for their assistance in the case.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Christopher Pohl and Charles Dell’Anno of the Narcotics & Money Laundering Unit are prosecuting the case.
