Shiprock Man Sentenced to 8 Years in Federal Prison for Assaulting Ex-Girlfriend
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A Shiprock man has been sentenced to eight years and four months in federal prison for assaulting his ex-girlfriend, according to court records.
Dieter D. Douglas, 35, of Shiprock, New Mexico, and an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, was sentenced on May 11 in federal court to eight years and 4 months in prison for assaulting his ex-girlfriend on two separate incidents.
The incidents occurred on October 3, 2018, and May 14, 2019, at a home in Shiprock on the Navajo Nation. During these incidents, Douglas covered the victim’s mouth and strangled her with his hands, causing the victim to lose consciousness during both incidents.
According to court records, Douglas pleaded guilty to two counts of the offense on July 14, 2020. Upon his release from prison, Douglas will be subject to three years of supervised release.
The FBI investigated this case with assistance from the Navajo Nation Department of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Novaline D. Wilson prosecuted the case.
This case serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of domestic violence and the importance of seeking help and support for those who have been affected by it.
The Navajo Nation has a zero-tolerance policy for domestic violence and will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that those who commit such crimes are held accountable.
