Defendant Sentenced to Prison for Domestic Assault
Drew Beck, a 36-year-old member of the Mescalero Apache Tribe, has been sentenced to two years and five months in federal prison for domestic assault by a habitual offender. The sentencing took place on October 4, 2023, in federal court.
Beck’s conviction stems from an incident that occurred on March 2, 2020, at a shared residence in Otero County, New Mexico, on the Mescalero Apache Reservation. At the time, Beck’s girlfriend, Jane Doe, reported that he grabbed her as she was trying to leave, dragged her by her leg into the living room, threw her over the couch, and began strangling her. Law enforcement arrived before Beck could cause further harm, and Jane Doe was taken to a medical center for care and a domestic violence examination.
This is not Beck’s first run-in with the law. He has been convicted of similar incidents previously, including battery on a household member on August 4, 2011, and domestic violence on November 9, 2017. The severity of his crimes and his history of violence led the court to classify him as a habitual offender, resulting in a harsher sentence.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) investigated this case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron O. Jordan prosecuted the case. Upon his release from prison, Beck will be subject to three years of supervised release, ensuring that he will continue to face consequences for his actions.
The sentencing of Drew Beck serves as a reminder of the importance of holding individuals accountable for their violent behavior, particularly in cases of domestic assault. This type of behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated in our community.
As the investigation and prosecution of this case demonstrate, the justice system is committed to protecting victims of domestic violence and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable. The Bureau of Indian Affairs, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and law enforcement agencies will continue to work together to prevent and respond to domestic violence in all its forms.
The case of Drew Beck serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of domestic violence on individuals, families, and communities. We urge anyone who is a victim of domestic violence to seek help and support, and we encourage everyone to report any incidents of domestic violence to the authorities.
