BOSTON – A shocking case of child exploitation has come to light in Massachusetts, as 63-year-old Cromwell, Conn. man Samuel DiProto was sentenced to 84 months in prison for receiving child pornography.
DiProto’s lengthy sentence was handed down by U.S. District Court Judge Jeffrey Alker Meyer on Friday, May 1, 2015, in U.S. District Court in Bridgeport, Conn.
The defendant pleaded guilty in September 2014 to receiving child pornography. According to court documents, DiProto downloaded child pornography from a file sharing network between 2009 and March 2013.
A law enforcement official discovered DiProto’s child pornography stash after logging into the publicly available file sharing network and tracing a computer to the defendant’s location.
United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz, FBI Special Agent Patricia M. Ferrick, and Connecticut State Police Colonel Brian F. Meraviglia made the announcement today.
The case was investigated by the Connecticut State Police Computer Crimes Unit, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Connecticut Child Exploitation Task Force.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kevin O’Regan and Neeraj N. Patel prosecuted the case under the auspices of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of Massachusetts, avoiding a conflict of interest due to the defendant’s familial relationship with federal law enforcement in the District of Connecticut.
The case is brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to protect children from exploitation and abuse.
