Dmontrey Rayshawn Redmond, Gunfire Incident, Iowa 2021

A convicted felon who shot at a group of teenagers and hit a parked car has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison, according to a recent hearing in the United States District Court in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Dmontrey Rayshawn Redmond, 24, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was found guilty of one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

On November 29, 2020, Redmond exited a house into an alley in Cedar Rapids, where a group of five teenagers was walking. The teenagers began to run as Redmond exited the house, and he pointed a handgun towards them, firing in their direction. None of the teenagers were hit, but a nearby parked car was struck. Redmond went back into the house while tucking the gun into his pants.

Law enforcement responded to the scene of the shooting, and during the investigation, officers searched Redmond’s home and found a loaded Glock handgun. The spent shell casings found in the alley matched the rounds found in the Glock handgun, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ (ATF) National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN).

On December 4, 2020, Redmond went to a gun store in Waterloo, Iowa, with another individual named Jamie Marie Graham. Redmond instructed Graham to choose two Glock handguns and a box of .40 caliber ammunition. Graham lied on the forms, indicating she was the purchaser of the guns, while Redmond paid for the guns using a cash card in his name.

Redmond has prior convictions for assault, disorderly conduct, possession of drugs, theft, providing false identification, robbery, reckless use of a firearm resulting in bodily injury, and trafficking in stolen weapons. During the robbery, Redmond shot the victim of the robbery three times, once in the arm and twice in the legs.

Dmontrey Rayshawn Redmond was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams to 120 months’ imprisonment. He must also serve a three-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system. Redmond was also ordered to pay approximately $1,000 in restitution to the owner of the car he shot.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an evidence-based program proven to be effective at reducing violent crime.
