The Justice Department has launched a full-throttle crackdown on election-related crimes as November 8, 2016, looms, deploying field monitors, criminal prosecutors, and a 24-hour complaint hotline to stamp out voter intimidation, ballot fraud, and civil rights violations at polling sites nationwide.
Federal agents and Civil Rights Division attorneys are on high alert, enforcing federal laws that bar discriminatory voting practices, threats at polling places, and tampering with voter registration systems. The Voting Section is actively monitoring compliance with landmark statutes including the Voting Rights Act, the National Voter Registration Act, and the Help America Vote Act—laws designed to protect access for minorities, the disabled, and overseas voters.
On Election Day, federal monitors will descend on polling locations across the country—sites to be disclosed just before voting begins. Lawyers in Washington, D.C., from both the Civil Rights Division’s Voting and Criminal Sections will field complaints in real time, coordinating with 94 U.S. Attorneys’ Offices to investigate allegations of suppression, fraud, or violence.
Anyone witnessing voter intimidation based on race, religion, or national origin can call the DOJ hotline at 1-800-253-3931 or 202-307-2767. TTY users can reach staff at 202-305-0082. Complaints may also be faxed, mailed, or submitted online via the Justice Department’s voting rights portal.
The Criminal Division is zeroing in on election fraud—mail-in ballot tampering, false registrations, impersonation, and vote buying—all federal crimes punishable by heavy fines and prison time. Prosecutors are working alongside local U.S. Attorneys to fast-track investigations where fraud threatens election integrity.
Authorities stress that acts of violence or threats at polling places must be reported immediately to 911. Once local law enforcement responds, the Justice Department must also be notified. The feds aren’t backing down: any attempt to undermine the vote will be met with the full weight of federal law.
