Domestic Assault by Habitual Offender Lands 35-Year-Old in Prison

A Little Eagle, South Dakota, man has been sentenced to 28 months in federal prison for his role in a brutal domestic assault.

Chat Moses Bobtail Bear, Sr., 35, was convicted of Domestic Assault by a Habitual Offender in a case investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

On August 6, 2013, a Bureau of Indian Affairs officer responded to a report of an assault at a residence in Little Eagle, where they found a female victim with numerous abrasions and lacerations to her face, as well as a broken nose and a broken hand.

The victim told authorities that she awoke to Bobtail Bear stomping on her face, and that he continued to assault her by punching and kicking her about the head and face.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley prosecuted the case, which was brought to the attention of the authorities when the victim ran out of the house and made it as far as the street before Bobtail Bear caught up to her and continued the assault.

Bobtail Bear has two prior judgments of conviction for domestic abuse of a spouse or intimate partner.

The 28-month sentence, which was handed down by U.S. District Judge Charles B. Kornmann on December 30, 2013, also includes three years of supervised release and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
