Cristian Lara Diaz, Fentanyl Trafficking, Massachusetts 2023

BOSTON – In a shocking turn of events, Cristian Lara Diaz, 44, a Dominican national, stood before federal court in Boston today, pleading guilty to severe fentanyl trafficking charges.

Lara Diaz’s conviction stems from a conspiracy to distribute over 400 grams of the deadly substance and his direct involvement in distributing at least 40 grams more. The court documents also outline his role in five separate transactions with an informant, all occurring between April 2017 and January 2018.

The sentence for conspiracy to distribute and possess fentanyl with intent to distribute over 400 grams carries a mandatory minimum of ten years, potentially life imprisonment, along with substantial fines totaling up to $10 million. Distribution of 40 grams or more carries its own severe penalties, including at least five years in prison.

United States Attorney Andrew E. Lelling, Special Agent in Charge Joseph R. Bonavolonta of the FBI’s Boston Field Division, and Boston Police Commissioner William Gross jointly announced the charges against Lara Diaz, who has been held in federal custody since his arrest on August 29, 2019.

The investigation and subsequent arrest were a result of a joint effort by multiple law enforcement agencies through the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF). This partnership is dedicated to dismantling serious drug trafficking organizations and eliminating their illegal operations.

Lara Diaz’s co-defendant remains under investigation, and all charges are allegations. His presumed innocence until proven guilty in court is a cornerstone of our judicial system.
