Dominican National Sentenced for Illegal Reentry to the States

PHILADELPHIA – The grim reaper of justice has once again reaped its due. United States Attorney David Metcalf announced that Dagoberto Herrera-Abreu, a 52-year-old Dominican national with aliases Roberto Rovira, has been sentenced for the heinous crime of illegal reentry into the United States after his prior deportation.

” +

Herrera-Abreu, who had previously been removed from the U.S. in September 2010 following a conviction for possession with intent to deliver controlled substances, was handed down a sentence of 12 months and one day by United States District Judge Mia Roberts Perez on Monday. His transgression this time? A drug offense that landed him back in the clutches of justice.

” +

This is not Herrera-Abreu’s first brush with the criminal underworld, as he had previously absconded from a drug treatment facility, which earned him additional prison time. But his latest escapade this July, when he was nabbed by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) during a narcotics search warrant execution in Northeast Philadelphia, marked his downfall.

” +

Following his release from prison earlier this year, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers took him into federal custody. He was charged with illegal reentry in February and pleaded guilty in April, showing little regard for the rule of law.

Another foreign national facing the music is Claudio Reyes-Morales, a 36-year-old Mexican national who has been sentenced to time served for his illegal reentry. Reyes-Morales had previously been removed from the U.S. in October 2011 and June 2012 after encounters with the U.S. Border Patrol in Arizona.

” +

This time, it was the Norristown (Pa.) Police Department that flagged Reyes-Morales for arrest in February of this year. His capture by HSI and ICE officers during an unrelated search warrant execution in July marked the end of his saga, which concluded with a plea of guilty this week.

These cases are part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that targets illegal immigration, cartels, transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and violent crime. The Department of Justice’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) have once again shown their might in the fight against lawlessness.
