BOSTON – In a harsh crackdown on immigration crimes, a Dominican national has been sentenced to 36 months in prison for unlawfully reentering the US. Joaquin Diaz, a 39-year-old Middleton resident, was handed down the sentence by US Senior District Court Judge Douglas P. Woodlock in federal court.
According to court records, Diaz was encountered in Middleton on May 21, 2014. This was not his first run-in with the law, as he was previously deported in 2007. However, he managed to reenter the country illegally on at least one occasion, prompting federal charges in November 2018.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Suzanne Sullivan Jacobus of US Attorney Andrew E. Lelling’s Major Crimes Unit prosecuted the case. US Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations played a significant role in the investigation.
The illegal reentry charge stems from Diaz’s October 2019 guilty plea to one count of unlawful reentry of a deported alien. As part of his sentence, Diaz will also be subject to three years of supervised release upon completion of his prison term. Following the completion of his sentence, he will be deported.
This case highlights the ongoing struggle to combat immigration crimes in the US. As the country grapples with the complexities of immigration policy, law enforcement agencies continue to crack down on those who break the law.
US Attorney Andrew E. Lelling and Todd M. Lyons, Field Office Director of ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston, made the announcement. The case serves as a reminder that immigration crimes will not be tolerated in the US.
In a statement, US Attorney Lelling emphasized the importance of upholding the law and protecting national security. He vowed to continue working with law enforcement agencies to bring those who break the law to justice.
