Tax Cheat Behind Bars
Donald Grant, 40, of Binghamton, New York, is finally paying the price for his crimes after being sentenced to 15 months in prison for preparing a false tax return and attempting to interfere with the administration of Internal Revenue Laws. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge David N. Hurd in Syracuse, New York, on Thursday, [Year omitted].
According to court documents, Grant prepared 27 tax returns that contained false information, causing taxpayers to receive more than $100,000 in refunds they were not entitled to. The scheme, which lasted for four years, was designed to line Grant’s own pockets with ill-gotten gains.
But Grant’s crimes didn’t stop there. In an attempt to cover his tracks, he interfered with the IRS-Criminal Investigation’s inquiry into the returns he prepared and filed. He provided a client with a counterfeit profit and loss statement, encouraged clients to provide false information to investigators, and even provided false information himself when interviewed by an IRS-Criminal Investigation Special Agent.
U.S. Attorney Richard S. Hartunian and Shantelle P. Kitchen, Special Agent in Charge of IRS-Criminal Investigation’s New York Field Office, announced Grant’s sentence, which also includes a one-year term of supervised release to begin after his release from prison. Grant was also ordered to pay $107,045 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service.
The case was investigated by the New York Field Office (Syracuse) of the IRS-Criminal Investigation, and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Levine. This is just one example of the type of egregious tax fraud that is all too common in our country. It’s a reminder that those who break the law will be held accountable.
The sentencing of Donald Grant serves as a warning to others who would engage in similar schemes. The IRS will continue to investigate and prosecute those who attempt to cheat the system and line their own pockets with taxpayer dollars.
As the Grimy Times continues to expose the crimes of those who have been caught, we will also continue to report on the efforts of law enforcement to bring these individuals to justice.
