WILMINGTON, VT – Donna Young, a 68-year-old resident of Wilmington, was sentenced to one year of probation in United States District Court in Burlington for her role in a fraudulent bankruptcy scheme. Judge William K. Sessions III handed down the sentence following Young’s guilty plea to making false statements under penalty of perjury.
Young had previously faced charges related to a series of bankruptcy petitions she filed using her daughter, Kelli-Ann Young’s, identity without her knowledge or consent. According to court documents, these fraudulent actions took place on two dates in 2013 and another occasion in October 2014, all involving a property in West Dover that Kelli-Ann had once owned.
The scheme was exposed when the foreclosure and eviction proceedings pending against the property were halted due to the bankruptcy filing. Young’s actions not only stayed those legal processes but also allowed her to remain in the property throughout the ordeal.
On April 13, 2016, a federal grand jury in Rutland indicted Young on three counts of false statements. U.S. District Judge Sessions imposed the probationary term after Young pleaded guilty last November. The investigation into this case was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Young was represented by Federal Public Defender Michael Desautels, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregory Waples prosecuted the case.
