Christian B. Drennan, Fentanyl Importation, Pennsylvania 2018

PITTSBURGH, PA – Another cog in the fentanyl supply chain has fallen. Christian B. Drennan, 28, formerly of Donora, Pennsylvania, admitted in federal court today to importing the deadly opioid fentanyl from China and illegally possessing seven firearms. The case, a product of a multi-agency investigation, underscores the relentless flow of illicit narcotics into the United States and the dangerous combination of drugs and guns.

Drennan, now residing in St. Clairsville, Ohio, pleaded guilty before Senior United States District Judge Joy Flowers Conti to two counts: a federal narcotics violation and a federal firearm law violation. According to court documents, between April 2018 and September 6, 2018, Drennan conspired to import fentanyl via the internet directly from China. Simultaneously, he possessed a cache of seven firearms while actively using controlled substances – a clear and dangerous breach of federal law.

The investigation, led by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)/Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the United States Postal Inspection Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Pennsylvania State Police under the Joint Criminal Opioid Darknet Enforcement (J-CODE) initiative, revealed a calculated scheme to profit from the opioid crisis. Authorities tracked the fentanyl shipments and uncovered Drennan’s illegal firearm possession, building a solid case against him. J-CODE is a multi-agency task force specifically targeting drug trafficking on the dark web.

Assistant United States Attorney Shardul S. Desai is leading the prosecution, signaling a continued federal push to dismantle these dangerous operations. The potential penalties are steep. Drennan faces a maximum total sentence of 30 years in prison, a fine of $1,250,000, or both. However, Judge Conti will determine the actual sentence on September 25, 2019, at 3:30 p.m., taking into account the severity of the crime and Drennan’s criminal history – if any.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the pervasive threat of fentanyl and the lengths to which individuals will go to profit from addiction. The illicit drug is responsible for countless overdoses and deaths across the country. The fact that Drennan was also illegally armed adds another layer of danger and highlights the need for strict enforcement of firearm laws, especially concerning those involved in drug trafficking.

Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as sentencing approaches. The opioid epidemic remains a national crisis, and we remain committed to exposing the individuals and networks fueling this deadly trade. The J-CODE initiative, while effective, is fighting a constant battle against increasingly sophisticated methods of drug importation and distribution.
