Baltimore, Maryland – In a devastating blow to the opioid epidemic plaguing Baltimore, Donronald Dosey, a 33-year-old fentanyl dealer, has been sentenced to six years in federal prison for possession with intent to distribute more than 40 grams of fentanyl. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Catherine C. Blake on unspecified terms.
According to his plea agreement, from October 2020 through March 1, 2021, Dosey was part of a drug trafficking conspiracy involving large amounts of fentanyl and other controlled substances. The operation, which took place in an apartment in Pikesville, Maryland, saw Dosey and his co-conspirators process fentanyl and other drugs, mixing them with cutting agents and packaging them for resale. This disturbing evidence highlights the intricate networks behind the opioid crisis.
On March 1, 2021, law enforcement witnessed Dosey leave the apartment with a co-conspirator, who was carrying a bag containing narcotics. The pair entered a vehicle and drove away, prompting law enforcement to follow their vehicle to a drug store parking lot in the 1500 block of Reisterstown Road in Pikesville. It was here that the duo planned to conduct a drug transaction, but law enforcement intervened, stopping the vehicle and searching Dosey and the vehicle. The search yielded 20 separate clear plastic bags, each containing approximately 50 gelatin capsules filled with a mixture of fentanyl weighing a total of 569 grams, which Dosey admitted he intended to distribute.
This case is also part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) investigation. OCDETF works to identify, disrupt, and dismantle the highest-level criminal organizations threatening the United States using a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven, multi-agency approach that leverages the strengths of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies against criminal networks.
In a statement, United States Attorney Erek L. Barron praised the DEA, the Baltimore County Police Department, and the Baltimore Police Department for their tireless efforts in the investigation. Barron acknowledged the dedication of Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jason D. Medinger and Anatoly Smolkin, who prosecuted the case.
The sheer scale of the operation is staggering. A lethal dose of fentanyl is approximately two milligrams, meaning the quantity possessed by Dosey, and which he intended to distribute, is enough to kill 20,000 people. This disturbing revelation serves as a poignant reminder of the devastating impact of the opioid crisis.
