A Rockford man is behind bars after being sentenced to four years in federal prison for illegally possessing a loaded handgun with an obliterated serial number.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Northern District of Illinois, Dontrel U. Brown, 24, was found guilty of possessing the firearm on May 13, 2020, in Rockford.
Brown was on probation at the time for previous felony convictions and was prohibited by federal law from possessing the firearm.
The sentence was imposed by U.S. District Judge Iain D. Johnston after a hearing in federal court in Rockford.
The investigation was led by the Chicago Field Division of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, & Explosives, with valuable assistance provided by the Rockford Police Department.
The government was represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jessica S. Maveus.
Brown’s sentence marks the latest development in a case that highlights the importance of enforcing federal laws related to firearms possession.
