Doris Betts Charged with Medicaid Fraud in Kansas

A Kansas City, Kan., woman has been indicted on a federal charge of Medicaid fraud after allegedly submitting false claims for over $587,000, according to U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom and Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt.

The indictment names Doris Betts, 54, of Kansas City, Kan., who is charged with six counts of health care fraud. The allegations state that between January 2008 and the present, Betts submitted false claims for personal services, residential support, day support, and sleep cycle support for seven different Medicaid consumers through four different billing agencies.

The indictment alleges that Betts’ documentation of services showed several discrepancies, including claiming to be with two or more different clients at the same time, providing services when clients were in the hospital, and claiming to provide services when she was at her own medical appointments.

The indictment also alleges that Betts documented over 750 work days that exceeded 24 hours, with the highest total being 39.5 hours in a single day. If convicted, Betts faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000 on each count.

The investigation was conducted by Health and Human Services and Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt’s Medicaid Fraud Division. Assistant Attorney General Stefani Hepford of the Kansas Attorney General’s Office and Assistant U.S. Attorney Tanya Treadway are prosecuting the case.
