PHILADELPHIA – The sanctity of the ballot box is under fire as two Pennsylvania residents are facing federal charges for allegedly casting multiple votes in presidential elections. United States Attorney David Metcalf announced the indictments today, alleging brazen attempts to undermine the democratic process.
Matthew Laiss, 31, of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, stands accused of voting twice in the 2020 election. The indictment details a calculated scheme: Laiss allegedly established residency in Frostproof, Florida, in August 2020, securing a Florida driver’s license and voter registration. Yet, just weeks later, on or around October 31, 2020, he allegedly completed and returned a Pennsylvania mail-in ballot sent to his parents’ address in Ottsville, Pennsylvania. Then, on November 3, 2020, he allegedly cast a ballot in person in Florida. If convicted, Laiss faces a maximum possible sentence of five years of imprisonment on each count, along with three years of supervised release and a fine ranging from $10,000 to $250,000.
The investigation, spearheaded by the FBI with assistance from the Pennsylvania Department of State, paints a picture of deliberate deception. Assistant United States Attorney Mark Dubnoff is prosecuting the case. This isn’t about legitimate voting discrepancies; it’s about a calculated effort to cast multiple ballots, a direct assault on the integrity of the election.
The alleged double-dealing didn’t stop there. Miya Pack, 39, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is also facing charges for voting more than once in a federal election and voter fraud. According to the indictment, Pack was registered in both Bergen County, New Jersey, since 2004, and Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, since 2016. On October 26, 2024, she allegedly voted early in Teaneck, New Jersey. Then, on November 5, 2024 – Election Day – she allegedly cast another ballot in Philadelphia. Like Laiss, Pack faces up to five years in prison per count, plus supervised release and a hefty fine if found guilty.
The FBI, with help from election officials in New Jersey and Philadelphia, built the case against Pack. Assistant United States Attorney Nancy Potts is handling the prosecution. The Office of the Superintendent of Elections for Bergen County, New Jersey, and the Office of Philadelphia City Commissioner Seth Bluestein provided crucial assistance.
It’s crucial to remember that these indictments contain allegations only. Both Laiss and Pack are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. But the charges themselves raise serious questions about the vulnerabilities within our election system and the lengths to which some will go to manipulate it. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and bring you the unvarnished truth as it unfolds.
