A shocking case of child exploitation has come to light in Yakima, Washington, as Douglas Craig Parsley, 34, was sentenced to 22 years in federal prison for attempting to produce child pornography.
On March 2, Chief U.S. District Judge Stanley A. Bastian delivered the harsh sentence, which also includes an additional 20 years of federal supervision after Parsley’s release from prison. The defendant pleaded guilty on October 27, 2021, to the charge of attempted production of child pornography.
Parsley’s heinous crime came to light during an investigation by the Internet Crimes Against Children (‘ICAC’) Task Force Officers in Contra Costa, California, in 2019. The task force had been tracking a suspect who was attempting to meet up with another person to engage in sexual activity with a minor. The investigation led to Parsley’s home in Yakima, where a federal search warrant was executed, resulting in the seizure of several electronic devices containing evidence of Parsley’s crimes.
The devices revealed that Parsley had taken images of a toddler he was babysitting in November 2019. He had also used these images in online communications with others, further solidifying the charges against him.
U.S. Attorney Vanessa R. Waldref commended the efforts of the Homeland Security Investigations agents and task force officers involved in the case, stating that Parsley’s actions ‘warrant every minute of the significant sentence imposed.’ She added that the children of the Eastern District of Washington deserve to live in a safe and strong community, and that the collaboration between law enforcement agencies is crucial in protecting them.
Special Agent in Charge Robert Hammer echoed Waldref’s sentiments, stating that Parsley’s decision to exploit a working mother and trade child exploitation images will keep him behind bars for the next 22 years. He emphasized the importance of task force-based law enforcement partnerships in keeping Washington communities safe from child predators.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the U.S. Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project aims to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
