Dr. Barbara A. Bruce, Prescription Racket, Louisiana 2015

Dr. Barbara A. Bruce, 43, of New Orleans, has pled guilty to running a prescription racket out of her Lake Forest Boulevard clinic, transforming her medical license into a weapon for drug distribution. Between August 2014 and April 2015, her office at 9954 Lake Forest Blvd., Suite 10, operated not as a healthcare facility but as a pill mill, flooding the streets with highly addictive Schedule II and III controlled substances.

Bruce admitted in court documents that she wrote prescriptions without ever laying eyes on patients—no exams, no diagnoses, no medical justification. Patients walked in, paid cash, and walked out with powerful opioids and other controlled drugs, all under the thin veil of medical legitimacy. Her actions weren’t rogue incidents—they were part of a calculated conspiracy to profit from addiction.

She didn’t operate alone. Bruce conspired with a member of her own medical staff and with Kenneth Knight, who pocketed 50 percent of the profits from her illicit practice. Knight has already pled guilty to the same charge and is set for sentencing on April 20, 2017, signaling the collapse of a network built on greed and deception.

The fallout is severe. Bruce now faces up to five years in federal prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release. U.S. District Judge Nannette Jolivette Brown scheduled her sentencing for May 4, 2017, where the full weight of her betrayal of the medical oath may be measured.

U.S. Attorney Kenneth A. Polite, who announced the plea, credited the DEA’s New Orleans Office and the IRS in Gulfport, Mississippi, for dismantling the operation. Their investigation peeled back layers of cash transactions and falsified records, exposing a scheme that exploited both the healthcare system and vulnerable patients.

Assistant U.S. Attorney John F. Murphy is leading the prosecution. In a city still battling the opioid epidemic, Bruce’s case stands as a grim reminder: when doctors turn dealers, the body count rises—and justice, when it comes, must hit hard.
