A pound of crystal death was stopped just west of Shreveport when state troopers pulled over a car carrying Rustin J. Stein, 30, of Bossier City, and James Lee Adkins, 30, of Minden — both now sentenced for trying to flood North Louisiana with methamphetamine shipped from Texas.
Last Friday, U.S. District Judge Elizabeth E. Foote slammed Stein with 51 months in federal prison and Adkins with 87 months, followed by three years of supervised release. Both pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, admitting they crossed state lines to buy drugs and bring them back for resale.
The bust went down February 8, 2016, near mile marker 2 on Interstate 20. A Louisiana State Police trooper made a traffic stop — what seemed routine turned into a major drug seizure. A search of the vehicle revealed one full pound of meth stashed inside the right rear door panel. Hidden in plain pockets: another baggie on Adkins, a small stash in Stein’s purse.
Stein admitted she traveled with Adkins to Dallas to buy the drugs from a source for $5,000. They planned to split both the cost of the drugs and the cost of the trip — a business deal built on addiction and desperation. Instead, they got federal indictments.
The investigation was a joint push by the Drug Enforcement Administration and Louisiana State Police — a reminder that interdiction efforts are still choking off supply lines from major trafficking routes like I-20. Assistant U.S. Attorney Brandon B. Brown prosecuted the case, ensuring no plea deals erased accountability.
