Tadas Petrauskas, ID Theft, Pittsburgh PA, 2023

PITTSBURGH – The Justice Department has landed a significant victory in the battle against cybercriminals, as Tadas Petrauskas, the notorious online identity thief known as ‘Dr. Smurf,’ has been sentenced to five years of probation for his audacious digital heist.

The 23-year-old resident of Brick, New Jersey, was the mastermind behind a sophisticated scheme that compromised the data hosting systems of a major data center with tens of thousands of customers. Petrauskas, operating under the moniker ‘Dr. Smurf,’ sold access to the personal information of 39 employees, allowing unauthorized parties to delve into sensitive computer systems.

United States District Judge Nora Barry Fischer imposed the sentence on Petrauskas today, sending a clear message that cybercrime does not go unpunished. The court was informed that the criminal activities took place on or around July 16, 2008, when Petrauskas executed his digital coup.

Assistant United States Attorney Paul E. Hull led the prosecution against Petrauskas, ensuring justice was served on behalf of the government. U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton commended the law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation and successful prosecution of this case. The FBI, with assistance from the United States Postal Inspection Service, the National Cyber Forensics Training Alliance, the Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section of the DOJ, and Lithuanian authorities, played pivotal roles in bringing Petrauskas to justice.

As a result of his conviction, Petrauskas will now face the harsh realities of probation, which is far more restrictive than many believe. His sentence serves as a stark reminder that even those who operate in the shadows of the digital world are not immune from the long arm of the law.
