Dr. Stanley B. Marable, Healthcare Fraud, Georgia 2017

A Valdosta dentist has been sentenced to 27 months in prison for his role in a massive healthcare fraud scheme. Dr. Stanley B. Marable, 55, was handed down the sentence by United States District Court Judge Hugh Lawson on March 16, 2017, in Valdosta, Georgia.

According to the United States Attorney G. F. ‘Pete’ Peterman, III, Dr. Marable was reimbursed through Medicaid payments from the State of Georgia for his services as a general practice dentist. However, an audit performed by the Georgia Department of Audits and Accounts in 2012 revealed several billing irregularities. Further investigation by the Georgia Medicaid Fraud Control Unit found that Dr. Marable had submitted claims for the extraction of teeth for 3,145 patients, totaling over $789,000 in Medicaid payments.

However, it was discovered that Dr. Marable had not actually extracted the teeth from many of the patients for whom claims of reimbursement had been submitted. In fact, several patients had never had any teeth extracted, including one individual who did not even know Dr. Marable was a dentist.

As part of his plea agreement, Dr. Marable agreed to pay a total of $789,841 in restitution to the Georgia Medicaid Program. The full amount of restitution was paid prior to sentencing.

Dr. Marable’s conduct was deemed ‘egregious’ by United States Attorney Peterman, who noted that in many cases, Dr. Marable claimed to have pulled 20 or more teeth from a single patient, and in one case, he claimed to have extracted 31 of the patient’s 32 teeth.

The case was investigated by the Georgia Medicaid Fraud Control Unit and the Georgia Department of Community Health – Office of Inspector General. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Sonja Profit and Tamara Jarrett and Georgia Assistant Attorney General James Mooney.

Dr. Marable’s sentence includes 27 months in Federal prison, followed by 2 years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay a fine of $5,000 and a $100 mandatory assessment fee.

Questions concerning this case should be directed to Brittney Kish Lightsey, United States Attorney’s Office, at (478) 752-3511.
