Seattle – In a gritty turn of justice, Humberto Lopez Rodriguez, a 31-year-old citizen of Mexico who once called Renton, Washington home, has been sentenced to an additional five years in prison for his relentless pursuit of drug trafficking. The sentence was announced by Acting U.S. Attorney Teal Luthy Miller.
Lopez Rodriguez had previously served a five-year term for drug trafficking before skipping out on federal correctional authorities and disappearing into the shadows. In December 2023, he was apprehended with 13 kilos of cocaine and a firearm in his vehicle as it barreled toward Washington from California. His latest escapade landed him another five years behind bars, announced Miller.
“You committed this crime after you failed to surrender to corrections,” U.S. District Judge Tana Lin pronounced at the sentencing hearing. “You’ll be deported after serving your sentence, and the American Dream is dead for you.”
Lopez Rodriguez was a key figure in a sprawling investigation into drug traffickers with Mexican and Colombian ties. In June 2024, DEA, Seattle Police Department, and IRS Criminal Investigation executed 24 warrants resulting in Lopez Rodriguez’s initial capture on a drug run six months prior to his escape.
The investigation yielded significant results: law enforcement seized 84,000 fentanyl pills, over a kilogram of fentanyl powder, 32 kilograms of cocaine, 15 kilograms of methamphetamine, nearly three kilograms of heroin, 18 firearms, and $71,000 in drug proceeds. Five of the 16 defendants charged have pleaded guilty, facing sentences ranging from five to ten years.
This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a Justice Department initiative targeting illegal immigration, cartels, transnational criminal organizations, and violent crime. The DEA and Seattle Police Department led the investigation, with support from multiple law enforcement agencies. Operation Take Back America represents a coordinated effort to protect communities from the scourge of drug trafficking.
