In the shadow of America’s Great Depression, a trio of influential brothers from Delaware’s esteemed Du Pont family is leading the charge against the nation’s strict prohibition laws. Pierre S. du Pont, the great-grandson of the family’s founder, Éleuthère Irénée du Pont, has taken up the mantle, rallying his family’s vast wealth, influence, and charisma in a war against the dry laws. Like the swashbuckling trio of the Three Musketeers, Pierre and his brothers, Lamot and another, stand shoulder to shoulder in their fight for freedom. In a bold move, Pierre has launched a personal referendum on the Klair law of Delaware, which prohibits physicians from prescribing whiskey or brandy for medicinal purposes. He has written letters to over 112,000 Delaware citizens, asking for their opinions on the law. To date, a majority of respondents favor repeal, a victory for Pierre and his brothers in their crusade against the dry laws.
