A Butler County resident has been sentenced to three years of probation, including six months of home confinement, and ordered to pay restitution of $13,496.00 for embezzling funds from a labor union.
The sentencing, which took place in federal court in Pittsburgh, was handed down by United States District Court Judge Nora Barry Fischer. The defendant, Duane Rill, of Cranberry Township, Pa., was convicted of embezzlement from the Berry Metal Employees’ Association, an independent union.
According to information presented to the court, Rill stole $13,496.00 from the union by writing and cashing unauthorized union checks and by making an unauthorized cash withdrawal during the period from March 23, 2007, to November 20, 2009.
The successful prosecution of Rill was the result of an investigation led by the Department of Labor, Office of Labor Management Standards. U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton commended the agency for its work in bringing the case to a successful conclusion.
Assistant United States Attorney Mary McKeen Houghton prosecuted the case on behalf of the government.
Rill’s sentence includes three years of probation and six months of home confinement. He has also been ordered to pay restitution of $13,496.00.
The case is a reminder that embezzlement and other white-collar crimes will be taken seriously by law enforcement and prosecutors.
