MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA – Christian Scott Dunham, 22, of Poteau, Oklahoma, will spend the next 24 years and 5 months behind bars for the cold-blooded killing of his neighbor. Dunham received a 293-month federal prison sentence after pleading guilty to Murder in Indian Country – Second Degree.
The August 20, 2022, shooting wasn’t a heat-of-the-moment brawl. Investigators say Dunham deliberately shot the victim with a .22 caliber revolver in the early morning hours. The location? Le Flore County, squarely within the boundaries of the Choctaw Nation Reservation in the Eastern District of Oklahoma – a jurisdictional detail that brought federal authorities into the case.
The investigation was a coordinated effort. Detectives from the Poteau Police Department initially responded, quickly joined by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation and the full weight of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. They pieced together the evidence, leaving no doubt about Dunham’s involvement.
On February 13, 2023, facing mounting evidence, Dunham entered a guilty plea. It was a calculated move, but it didn’t lessen the severity of his actions. U.S. District Judge John F. Heil, III, delivered the sentence, making it clear that such violence will not be tolerated.
Assistant United States Attorney Joshua Satter prosecuted the case, meticulously presenting the evidence that led to the conviction. Dunham will remain in the custody of the U.S. Marshal until he’s transported to a designated Bureau of Prisons facility. The sentence is non-paroleable, meaning there’s no chance of early release.
This case serves as a grim reminder of the violence that continues to plague even the quietest corners of Oklahoma. It also underscores the crucial role federal agencies play in upholding the law within Indian Country, ensuring justice for victims and accountability for perpetrators like Christian Scott Dunham.
