Jacksonville Man Sentenced to 7 Years for Possessing Firearm as Convicted Felon
In a federal court sentencing, 39-year-old Dwayne Eric Thompson of Jacksonville, Florida, received a seven-year prison term followed by three years of supervised release for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The charge was found guilty by a jury on July 11, 2023.
Upon Thompson’s arrest by Jacksonville Sheriff’s Officers, a loaded pistol was discovered in the center console of his vehicle during a search. Despite all passengers initially denying knowledge of the firearm, DNA evidence presented at trial revealed that Thompson’s DNA was present on the firearm and the loaded magazine.
As a convicted felon, Thompson is prohibited from possessing firearms under federal law. At the time of the offense, he was also on federal supervised release due to previously possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney John Cannizzaro led the prosecution.
