An Acoma Pueblo man was sentenced to prison for his role in a fatal car crash that took the life of a 13-month-old child.
Dwight T. Brown, 19, was sentenced to 20 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release for involuntary manslaughter in the death of the infant.
According to court documents, Brown was driving under the influence of alcohol on April 9, 2015, when he struck and killed the 13-month-old child on Acoma Pueblo in Cibola County, New Mexico.
Brown was arrested on April 15, 2015, and charged with voluntary manslaughter. He later pleaded guilty to a felony information charging him with involuntary manslaughter, which carries a harsher sentence.
The case was investigated by the Laguna/Acoma Agency of the BIA’s Office of Justice Services and the Acoma Pueblo Tribal Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Niki Tapia-Brito prosecuted the case.
Brown’s sentence is a harsh reminder of the consequences of driving under the influence. The loss of a life is always a tragedy, and this case serves as a stark warning to others who may be tempted to get behind the wheel after drinking.
The community is still reeling from the loss of the young child, and Brown’s sentencing offers some measure of justice to the family.
