HAMMOND, IN – In a stunning revelation from the United States Attorney’s Office, Dipen Patel, 34, of Dyer, Indiana, has been slammed with charges for violating the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA).
The defendant is accused of knowingly distributing an unregistered pesticide called “DOOM” in two motels located in Michigan City and Howe, Indiana. This brazen act of environmental disregard has prompted a federal investigation.
Documents reveal that Patel’s actions were deliberate, as the pesticide was applied without the proper registration with the EPA. The Northern District of Indiana Environmental Crimes Task Force, led by the Environmental Protection Agency-Criminal Investigation Division, conducted the probing investigation into this case.
Plea agreements and information have been filed against Patel, but it’s important to note that an Information is merely an allegation and does not constitute proof of guilt. All persons charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
Assistant United States Attorney Toi Denise Houston, Trial Attorney Richard J. Powers, U.S. Department of Justice Environmental and Natural Resource Division, and Special Assistant United States Attorney David P. Mucha, Environmental Protection Agency, are handling the prosecution. If convicted, Patel may face significant penalties as determined by federal sentencing statutes and guidelines.
The severity of the charges underscores the government’s commitment to enforcing environmental laws, ensuring that those who disregard public safety and the law are held accountable. Stay tuned for further developments in this case.
