A former Shreveport police officer has been charged with using unreasonable force against an arrestee in Caddo Parish, Louisiana, in a shocking case of police brutality.
The indictment, handed down by a federal grand jury in Shreveport on August 5, 2019, alleges that defendant Dylan Hudson, 34, punched the arrestee in the face and head, kneeed him in the stomach, tased him in the neck and head, pistol-whipped him in the head, slammed his head into the ground, and kicked him in the face.
The use of force was alleged to have caused bodily injury to the arrestee, and involved the use of dangerous weapons, including a Taser, a pistol, and a shod foot.
Hudson is accused of willfully depriving the arrestee of his right to be free from the use of unreasonable force during an arrest. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000.
The case is being investigated by the FBI New Orleans Field Office and is being prosecuted by Trial Attorney Thomas Johnson of the Civil Rights Division and Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary Mudrick of the Western District of Louisiana.
A formal accusation of criminal conduct, an indictment is not evidence of guilt. The defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
The indictment in this case highlights the need for accountability within law enforcement agencies and the importance of protecting the rights of citizens.
