Colton White Feather, a 22-year-old man from Eagle Butte, South Dakota, has been charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury.
According to the indictment, White Feather allegedly assaulted an adult female with a mop handle on July 29, 2016, causing serious injuries to her.
White Feather was indicted by a federal grand jury on May 16, 2017, and appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on May 19, 2017, pleading not guilty to the Indictment.
The maximum penalty upon conviction is up to 10 years in custody and/or a $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release, and up to $200 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Miller is prosecuting the case, which is being conducted by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services.
White Feather was released on bond pending trial and a trial date has not been set. The charges are merely accusations and White Feather is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
