A 22-year-old man from Eagle Butte, South Dakota, has been charged with two counts of Sexual Abuse of a Minor.
According to the indictment, Randall Little Shield engaged in a sexual act with a minor aged between 12 and 16 on two separate occasions. One incident occurred in June 2014, while the other took place between August 31 and September 1, 2014, in Eagle Butte.
The charges were brought by the United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson after a federal grand jury indicted Little Shield on October 15, 2014. He appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on October 28, 2014, and pleaded not guilty to the indictment.
The maximum penalty for conviction is 15 years in custody and/or a $250,000 fine, alongside at least five years up to life of supervised release and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
The investigation into the case is being conducted by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Mikal Hanson is prosecuting the case. Little Shield was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, and a trial date has not been set.
Little Shield is presumed innocent until proven guilty, and the charges against him are merely an accusation.
The case highlights the need for vigilance and protection of minors from abuse and exploitation. It is essential for communities to work together to prevent such crimes and support victims of abuse.
