A shocking act of violence has shaken the quiet town of Eagle Butte, South Dakota. On January 2013, 32-year-old Stanley Morrison unleashed a brutal attack on an unsuspecting victim, striking them with his fists and leaving them with serious bodily injury.
The brutal assault was the culmination of a long-standing feud between Morrison and the victim, but the exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear. One thing is certain, however: Morrison’s actions on that fateful day would change the course of their lives forever.
Fast forward to July 30, 2013, when a federal jury delivered a guilty verdict in the case, convicting Morrison of Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. The conviction carries a maximum penalty of 10 years of imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, or both; 3 years of supervised release; and a $100 special assessment.
The investigation into the assault was led by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Division, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Mikal Hanson handling the prosecution. The case against Morrison was built on a strong foundation of evidence, including eyewitness testimony and physical evidence collected from the scene of the crime.
Morrison, now 32, remains in custody, awaiting sentencing. A presentence investigation has been ordered, and a sentencing date has been set for October 28, 2013. The defendant was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
