Vine Janis, a 38-year-old man from Eagle Butte, South Dakota, is facing federal charges after being indicted for failure to register as a sex offender. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Janis failed to register and update his information under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act during three separate time frames: July 6 to July 17, 2017; April 1 to June 18, 2018; and September 1 to October 19, 2018. These lapses triggered the federal charge, which treats noncompliance with registry requirements as a serious criminal offense.

Janis appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on April 19, 2019, where he formally entered a plea of not guilty. Despite the plea, the stakes are high — conviction on the charge could land him up to 10 years in federal prison, a $250,000 fine, and up to life under supervised release. He would also be required to pay $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund, with possible restitution ordered.

The investigation was spearheaded by the U.S. Marshals Service, the federal agency often tasked with tracking down fugitives and monitoring high-risk offenders. Their work uncovered the gaps in Janis’s registration, leading to the federal indictment.
