Rae Jean Araujo Cota, a 36-year-old woman from Eagle Butte, South Dakota, was sentenced to 131 days in custody and 12 months of probation for two counts of Assault by Striking, Beating and Wounding.
According to court records, Araujo Cota was convicted of assaulting the same victim on two separate occasions in November and December of 2012 in Eagle Butte. She was initially indicted by a federal grand jury on January 16, 2013, for Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, but later pleaded guilty to the lesser charges of Assault by Striking, Beating and Wounding on March 22, 2013.
The investigation was conducted by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Division, and the case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Mikal Hanson.
Araujo Cota was also ordered to pay a $20 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno handed down the sentence on May 30, 2013, and Araujo Cota was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service to begin serving her sentence.
The sentencing marks the end of a lengthy investigation and prosecution that began with Araujo Cota’s initial indictment in January 2013.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of holding perpetrators of violent crimes accountable for their actions.
