East Sparta, OH – Jamie L. Casey, a 34-year-old resident of East Sparta, Ohio, has been handed down a severe justice for her audacious scheme to siphon off $100,000 from the Social Security Administration.
In a scathing sentence announced by U.S. Attorney Bridget M. Brennan, Judge J. Philip Calabrese ordered Casey to serve three days in prison, two years of post-release supervision, and pay $102,822 in restitution to the SSA after she pleaded guilty to theft of government property in August 2021.
Casey’s grandmother had been receiving Social Security retirement benefits, which were directly deposited into an account co-owned by the defendant. After her grandmother passed away, instead of halting the payments as required, Casey continued to collect and convert the funds for her own use between June 2012 and around June 2020.
According to court documents, Casey’s thievery netted a total of $102,822 in benefits she had no right to. Her actions were not only criminal but also a grave betrayal to the system designed to provide support for the elderly and disabled.
This case was investigated by the Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason W. White. It serves as a stark reminder that even those closest to us can turn into the most unlikely of criminals.
The grimy details of Casey’s crime underscore the gravity of financial fraud, especially when it targets government programs meant to aid the most vulnerable among us. As Jamie L. Casey begins her sentence and faces the repercussions of her actions, the community of East Sparta is left with a cautionary tale about trust and the law.
