Ebony Cook Sentenced for Meth Distribution in Eagle Butte

EBONY HOPE JUSTYNE COOK of Eagle Butte, South Dakota, faced the federal bench for her role in the illegal distribution of methamphetamine. United States Attorney Randolph J. Seiler announced that Cook was sentenced on April 24, 2017, by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange to serve an 8-month term followed by 3 years of supervised release.

The 20-year-old received a mandatory special assessment of $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund as part of her sentence. Cook’s criminal activities came to light on July 22, 2016, when she was indicted by a federal grand jury for distributing methamphetamine, a Schedule II controlled substance.

According to authorities, in Eagle Butte, Cook knowingly and intentionally distributed the dangerous drug to another person. The investigation into her crimes was conducted by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services Narcotics Division and the Northern Plains Safe Trails Drug Enforcement Task Force.

Assistant U.S. Attorney SaraBeth Donovan prosecuted the case against Cook, who pleaded guilty on February 7, 2017. Upon conviction, she was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service to begin her sentence.

This sentencing underscores the ongoing efforts by federal authorities in South Dakota to combat the scourge of methamphetamine and ensure public safety.
