GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: In a gritty blow to meth distribution in Eagle Butte, South Dakota, Jorie Malcolm Cavanaugh, 27, has been handed a six-month sentence of home confinement, reports the United States Attorney’s Office.
Cavanaugh was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange on May 15, 2017, following her conviction for Distribution of a Controlled Substance. The defendant will serve her time at her parent’s residence or another shelter outside the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Indian Reservation, according to the court’s Judgment Order.
This sentence comes after Cavanaugh, who was indicted by a federal grand jury on December 14, 2016, pleaded guilty on February 21, 2017. She admitted to distributing methamphetamine, a Schedule II Controlled Substance, on three separate occasions in Eagle Butte between July 7 and July 8, 2016.
The investigation was led by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services Narcotics Division, with Assistant U.S. Attorney SaraBeth Donovan handling the prosecution of the case.
As part of her sentencing, Cavanaugh was also ordered to serve four years of probation, pay a $500 fine, and contribute $100 to the Federal Crime Victims’ Fund. Following her sentence, she was released from custody.
This tough stance against drug trafficking in Eagle Butte marks a significant victory for law enforcement in South Dakota’s ongoing battle against methamphetamine abuse.
