Ebony R. Thorne, Possession with Intent to Distribute Crack Cocaine, Pennsylvania 2012

Crack cocaine has once again ravaged the streets of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, with 30-year-old Ebony R. Thorne pleading guilty to a charge of possession with the intent to distribute the illicit substance.

According to the United States Attorney David J. Hickton, Thorne pleaded guilty to one count in federal court, admitting to possessing less than 28 grams of cocaine base, commonly known as “crack,” with the intent to distribute it on October 31, 2012.

The guilty plea was entered before United States District Judge Kim R. Gibson, who has scheduled sentencing for February 4, 2014, at 11 a.m. Thorne now faces a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison, a fine of $1,000,000, or both, under the law.

The Federal Sentencing Guidelines will play a significant role in determining the actual sentence imposed, taking into account the seriousness of the offense and Thorne’s prior criminal history, if any. Assistant United States Attorney John J. Valkovci, Jr., is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government.

The investigation that led to Thorne’s prosecution was conducted by the Laurel Highlands Resident Agency of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Cambria County Drug Task Force. Their efforts have brought a measure of justice to the community, but the war on crack cocaine is far from over.

The scourge of crack cocaine continues to plague cities across the United States, with Johnstown being no exception. The case of Ebony Thorne serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of this highly addictive and destructive substance. As the community awaits Thorne’s sentencing, one thing is clear: the fight against crack cocaine will require continued vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the public.

In the meantime, Thorne will have to come to terms with the consequences of her actions. The road to recovery and rehabilitation will be long and arduous, but it is a necessary step towards healing and rebuilding. For the people of Johnstown, the hope is that this case will serve as a deterrent to others who would seek to peddle this poisonous substance, and that their community can begin to heal and move forward.
