A DC apartment turned into a crime scene last November when a career criminal attempted a desperate toss of drugs and a loaded handgun out a window as the police closed in. Derrick Thomas Martin, 33, now faces a lengthy federal prison sentence after a jury found him guilty on multiple charges related to drug trafficking and illegal firearm possession. The bust highlights the ongoing struggle to stem the flow of deadly fentanyl into the nation’s capital and the brazen disregard for public safety exhibited by repeat offenders.
Martin’s downfall began on Pennsylvania Avenue SE, where the Metropolitan Police Department’s Criminal Apprehension Unit arrived to execute an outstanding warrant from Maryland. That warrant wasn’t for a minor infraction; Martin was already wanted for previous drug and gun offenses in the neighboring state. Instead of surrendering, Martin panicked. According to federal prosecutors, as officers approached, he hurled a backpack out the window, hoping to ditch the evidence. It contained a shocking payload: approximately 700 grams of cocaine, over 5,700 fentanyl pills – enough to kill countless people – and a fully loaded Century Arms Micro Draco pistol, a compact version of the notorious AK-47 assault rifle.
The presence of a child in the apartment added another layer of outrage to the case. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro minced no words, branding Martin a “clear danger” to the community. “This wasn’t just about drugs and a gun,” Pirro stated. “It was about reckless indifference to the safety of a child. A loaded firearm and a lethal amount of fentanyl in the same space as a kid is unconscionable.” Pirro’s office has made fentanyl trafficking a top priority, linking it directly to the escalating overdose crisis gripping the city and the nation.
Martin’s criminal history is extensive, with a staggering 31 prior arrests. While the specifics of those arrests haven’t been fully released, the pattern paints a clear picture of a man consistently choosing a life of crime. He’s cycled through the system before, often facing minimal consequences that allowed him to quickly re-offend. This time, however, the feds are determined to keep him off the streets for a significant period. The Micro Draco recovered from the scene is particularly concerning, as the small, easily concealable weapon has become increasingly popular among street gangs and is often linked to violent crime.
The charges against Martin include possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and cocaine, and possession of an unregistered firearm. The fentanyl charge alone carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 5 years in federal prison, but the combination of charges and Martin’s extensive criminal record significantly increases the potential penalty. Under federal sentencing guidelines, he’s staring down a minimum of 15 years behind bars, and could easily receive a sentence far exceeding that. Prosecutors will likely argue for a harsher sentence given the quantity of drugs involved, the dangerous weapon, and the proximity of the child.
The recovery of the drugs and weapon was a collaborative effort between the Metropolitan Police Department and federal agents. The case was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, which has been aggressively targeting drug trafficking operations in the city. The feds have increased resources dedicated to dismantling these networks, focusing on both street-level dealers and the larger organizations that supply the drugs. This bust is a small victory in that fight, but the flow of fentanyl continues to be a major challenge.
Martin’s sentencing is scheduled for July 10, 2026, before Judge Trevor N. McFadden. The courtroom will be a battleground as both the prosecution and defense present their arguments. While a plea deal is still possible, it’s unlikely to significantly reduce the severity of the sentence given the overwhelming evidence and the seriousness of the crimes. The outcome of this case will send a message – or fail to send one – about the consequences of flooding DC streets with poison and endangering the lives of its residents.
This case underscores the urgent need for a multi-faceted approach to combat the drug crisis. Law enforcement efforts must be coupled with prevention programs, treatment options, and strategies to address the root causes of addiction and crime. Until then, the streets of DC will remain a battleground, and individuals like Derrick Thomas Martin will continue to pose a threat to the community.
