Edi Lenin Chirinos-Najera, Illegal Reentry, Iowa 2018

Edi Lenin Chirinos-Najera, a 26-year-old Honduran man living in Muscatine, Iowa, has been sentenced to almost five months in federal prison for illegally returning to the United States after being deported. On May 23, 2018, Chirinos-Najera pleaded guilty to one count of illegal reentry into the US.

According to court documents, Chirinos-Najera had previously been deported from the US in 2014, but he illegally reentered the country without permission from the US government in 2017. He was arrested in April 2018 for public intoxication, but initially denied ever being deported. However, an analysis of his fingerprints confirmed that he had indeed been deported in 2014.

The case against Chirinos-Najera was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Daniel C. Tvedt, with the assistance of the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Enforcement and Removal Operations. Chirinos-Najera will serve 143 days’ imprisonment, followed by a one-year term of supervised release.

Chirinos-Najera is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be turned over to immigration officials. The case remains pending on the charge of public intoxication. Chirinos-Najera’s sentencing was carried out in Cedar Rapids by Chief United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand.
