McALLEN, Texas – Justice, however delayed, came for a victim of brutal exploitation this week as Eduardo Javier Gomez, 32, of Edinburg, was sentenced to 70 months in federal prison. His former partner, Margarita Alvarez, 42, received two years of probation for their roles in a callous forced labor scheme, U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani announced. The couple preyed on a vulnerable individual illegally smuggled into the Rio Grande Valley, turning her into a modern-day slave.
The scheme unfolded between June 24 and July 8, 2021. Gomez and Alvarez didn’t just benefit from the victim’s free labor – they built their livelihood on it. Gomez also profited directly by exploiting the woman at a local fireworks stand, pocketing the earnings while she toiled without pay. The couple held the victim against her will after she was illegally smuggled into the area, demanding further payments from her family, ostensibly for her transport further north. When the family couldn’t meet their escalating demands, they escalated the abuse.
According to court documents, Gomez and Alvarez seized the victim’s phone, effectively cutting her off from the outside world, and forced her to perform domestic duties as a nanny and housekeeper in their Edinburg home. The fireworks stand was another site of exploitation, where Gomez compelled the victim to work alongside him, again without compensation. The couple treated her not as a human being, but as a disposable source of free labor, a tool to be used and discarded.
Law enforcement moved swiftly once alerted to the situation. Just two days after learning of the victim’s plight, authorities were able to locate and rescue her from her captors. The investigation, spearheaded by Homeland Security Investigations, revealed the full extent of the couple’s cruelty and greed. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Alexa D. Parcell, Sherri Zack, and Kim Leo meticulously built the case, ensuring the perpetrators faced consequences for their actions.
Eduardo Javier Gomez pleaded guilty on March 1, 2023, and will now begin serving his 70-month sentence. He remains in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility. Margarita Alvarez also pleaded guilty on the same date and will serve two years of supervised probation. Gomez will also serve three years of supervised release after completing his prison term. This sentence sends a clear message: exploiting vulnerable individuals for personal gain will not be tolerated.
This case underscores the persistent threat of human trafficking in the Rio Grande Valley. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the ongoing efforts to dismantle these criminal enterprises and bring justice to the victims. Anyone with information regarding suspected human trafficking activity is urged to contact Homeland Security Investigations or their local law enforcement agency.
