Fentanyl flooded Pittsburgh’s streets in early 2017, and federal prosecutors say Edjuan Jackson, 28, of Duquesne, and Anthony Ptomey, 26, of Pittsburgh, were key players. A federal grand jury returned a four-count indictment on February 6—unsealed today—charging both men with conspiracy to distribute fentanyl, a drug responsible for thousands of overdose deaths nationwide.
The indictment alleges that from March 1 to March 30, 2017, Jackson and Ptomey conspired to possess and distribute fentanyl across Allegheny County. On March 30, Jackson was found in possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute and is separately charged with possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime—carrying a mandatory minimum of five years and up to life in prison. That same day, he allegedly moved bulk quantities of the synthetic opioid in a coordinated trafficking effort.
Anthony Ptomey faces a separate charge for possession with intent to distribute a mixture containing heroin and fentanyl on April 17, 2017. Each drug count against him carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $1,000,000 fine, or both. The charges paint a picture of a tightly run operation feeding addiction and endangering communities during a peak period of the opioid epidemic.
For Jackson, the stakes are even higher. Beyond the 20-year maximum for drug charges, the firearm count adds a non-negotiable five-year minimum, stacking penalties that could keep him behind bars for life. Federal sentencing guidelines will weigh the severity of the offenses and any prior criminal history—though specifics have not yet been disclosed.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Timothy M. Lanni. The investigation was led by the FBI’s Western District of Pennsylvania Opioid Task Force, a multi-agency unit targeting drug networks with federal precision. Participating agencies include the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, Allegheny County Sheriff’s Department, Port Authority Police, and the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office, underscoring the regional alarm over opioid distribution.
An indictment is not a conviction. Edjuan Jackson and Anthony Ptomey are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. As the federal machinery moves forward, their case adds another grim chapter to Pennsylvania’s battle with fentanyl—a poison reshaping cities, families, and court dockets one pill at a time.
